Anyone can be the target of a potential scam, even the highest county law enforcement official.
After Escambia County Sheriff Grover Smith received a piece of suspicious mail this week, officials with the sheriff's department are issuing a word of caution to senior citizens in the county.
The card, received by senior citizens in the area, outlines an offer of up to $10,000 to help cover funeral expenses.
In the fine print at the bottom of the card, a disclaimer says the offer is not affiliated with or endorsed by any government agency.
The cards are addressed to return to a service center in Texas. “We don't know where this card orginates, but we certainly don't think it's from a legitimate organization,” Lambert said.
