Mr. Tom Nick Mathis, 76, died Friday, Jan. 23, 2009, in Century. He was a native and lifelong resident of Century. He was an employee of Bondurant Lumber Company for more than 17 years, a city councilman for the town of South Flomaton, retired from Independent Life and Accident Insurance and from Liberty National Life Insurance Company. He attended the Tabernacle Baptist Church and was preceded in death by his wife, Annie Mae Moore Mathis.
He is survived by a special friend and companion, Betty Jackson of Brewton; three sons, Jimmy Ray (Phyllis) Mathis of Byrneville, Fla., Bobby Mathis of Flomaton, and Tommy Lee (Melanie) Mathis of West Palm Beach, Fla., eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Noah C. (Chiquita) Mathis Jr. of Century, and John (Luvirn) Mathis of Atmore; a sister, Ida Mae Welch of Pensacola, Fla., and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 27, at 2 p.m. at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Steve Hart officiating. Burial followed at Flomaton Cemetery with Petty Eastside Chapel directing. Pallbearers were Dennis Mathis, Nick Mathis, Jason Mathis, Jeremy Mathis, Eric Mathis, Josh Barnes and Zac Sims.
