Safety first. That’s the motto of many industries and businesses as they go about their daily routines of work.
A perfect example of practicing that motto was demonstrated this week at the Brewton Georgia-Pacific mill.
An accident involving five victims was simulated on the site of GP’s facilities with response teams answering their call for help.
In any work environment, it is pleasing to know that officials have the safety of their workers in mind. Those same workers who are mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, children and friends to so many in our area.
Through GPs practice Thursday, company personnel and safety/rescue team members furthered their education on how to respond in a crises or dangerous situation.
The scenario at the mill brought out other local response teams to assist in keeping the area as safe as possible and rendering aid to the injured. Members of the Brewton Fire Department, Brewton Police Department, D.W. McMillan Ambulance Service, Escambia County EMA and EMS all responded to the mock drill as if there had been a real disaster at hand.
We applaud the foresight of officials and safety personnel at Georgia Pacific for putting a safety and rescue plan in motion. We also applaud the members of responding departments for their collaborate efforts to help insure the safety of everyone in our community.
Reflections of what might happen should keep safety in all homes, businesses and industries at the top of the priority list.
