The T.R. Miller Lady Tigers didn't have to win Saturday for anyone to be proud of them.
We already were — and not because of their trip to the state tournament or their double-digit win streak.
We're proud of the way they have played this year, with grit and tenacity that was never more on display than in Saturday's championship game.
Down 9 points at the half, the Lady Tigers roared back in the third quarter and then held their own in a tough fourth quarter against Madison Academy.
It wouldn't have mattered what the scoreboard looked like at the end of the game — although, of course, that state title is awfully nice.
What mattered is that these girls played hard and made themselves, their coaches, their parents and their school proud.
Youth sports can be such a first test of character. At an age with so many distractions around them, players go out every day and work hard to build their skills and build a
team. Even working hard sometimes doesn't lead to success, depending on how things go on the court or the field.
Those are lessons players will take with them beyond high school, into college and career and family life.
Today, we're proud of the Lady Tigers — not because they won, but because they fought for it.
