The Escambia County Commission agreed to enter into a contract with the U.S. Marshal Service concerning funding for housing federal inmates in the Escambia County Detention Center.
Smith also told commissioners the contract allowed for funding for a guard for transportation purposes at $19 per hour and would reimburse the county for mileage incurred in transporting the inmates at the current government rate of 55 cents per mile.
Smith said he believed the support of Vice President Joe Biden will help to continue funding for such programs.
Also during Monday’s commission meeting, officials also approved an annual agreement with the Alabama Emergency Management Agency. The agreement will bring $2851 in funding to the Emergency Management Agency offices of Escambia County.
County Administrator Tony Sanks said the funding would be used to purchase supplies for the local office.
