A $200,000 grant will help the Brewton Police Department improve its technological resources.
The grant — part of $550 million in funding approved by the U.S. Senate last week — will be put to good use, said Brewton City Clerk John Angel.
Brewton City Council members approved funding for some video microphones for officers in June 2008. The devices can be worn by officers, and they record voices and video so that officers have backup evidence of what happens when they respond to a call.
Angel said he would like to see the funding used for additional vehicle purchases for the department.
U.S. Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Ala., made the announcement of the funding after Congress approved  the money.
Other agencies named to receive funding under the bill include Mobile County Commission, Dothan Public Safety Emergency Communications System, Gulf Shores Law Enforcement and the Alabama Criminal Justice Information Center.
The bill includes critical funding for the law enforcement community to upgrade technology, including in-car computers, cameras and communications systems, Shelby said. The funding also bolsters forensic capabilities.  The following grants will assist state and local law enforcement in their ability to protect and serve their communities.
Angel said the city could expect to see the funds locally within three to four weeks.
