The Brewton City School Board has begun a two-year program that will help them make a difference in the education of Brewton’s children.
Lynn Smith, superintendent of Brewton City School System, said the program is one that resulted from a study that began in Iowa.
Smith said the AASB asked for interested systems to respond to a request to be part of the program in Alabama.
Members of the Brewton City School Board were joined by principals, assistant principals and some teachers during the first session of the project Friday. During that session, Smith said the group plowed through more than two modules of the 12-module project.
In phase one of the project, the focus of the program is to increase the understanding of the board and superintendent about their leadership for student achievement, Smith said.
According to information found on the Alabama Association of School Boards’ website, research has shown that many people have an impact on the success of students.
During the first phase of the project, Brewton officials will hear discussions on committing to high expectations and improved instruction for all students. Understanding the role of board members in student achievement and status of student learning will also being among topics covered in the phase.
Smith said project is all about sharing information between those responsible for student achievement.
