The idea of riding a bike to help build a house may be out of the ordinary, but volunteers with the Escambia County Habitat for Humanity are making the idea a reality.
Alecia Glaize, executive director of the organization, said the bike ride idea came from visiting volunteers at a previous home building event.
Glaize said the ride will cover nearly 30 miles when it begins at 8 a.m. on May 2.
Not only will the ride build relationships, every penny of registration fees will be put to work to build a home in the county.
The registration fee is $50 per rider, Glaize said.
The ride will begin at Burnt Corn Creek Park in Brewton and will end at Tom Byrne Memorial Park in Atmore.
Riders, and those who choose to join the group for the final two-mile stretch; will meet at the Escambia County Courthouse Annex in Atmore at 11 a.m., Glaize said.
A rest stop is planned at the halfway point of the ride, Glaize said. Riders will have an opportunity to rest and receive refreshments at the park in Flomaton.
Glaize said safety has already been addressed to ensure riders are taken care of during the ride.
Glaize said prizes at the end of the ride will include a trophy for the top male and the top female finisher. Any rider who contributes $100 or more will be entered in a drawing for a variety of prizes at the end of the ride.
Glaize said riders are encouraged to decorate their bicycles to celebrate Habitat. Prizes for the best decorated bike will also be awarded.
The Habitat Restore truck will be available in Atmore to bring bicycles back to Brewton.
Riders are encouraged to carpool back to Brewton following the ride, Glaize said.
