The weather has been beautiful lately, and the entire city seems full of color. It’s the perfect time to take a walk through Brewton. And if you do, you’ll find that business is in bloom in our community as much as the flowers are.
Let’s say you start on U.S. 31, south of town. Mike Hart’s new Badcock Furniture and More store is open and ready to serve customers.
Walk farther, and you’ll see a new store among the downtown shops. Rebecca’s of Brewton offers a variety of items for shoppers. Walking along the sidewalk gives you the perfect chance to peek in the windows of boardwalk stalwarts such as Weaver’s, Treasure Chest and Southern Heirlooms — and, since everyone needs a rest now and then, you can step inside for some air conditioning and a bit of shopping.
Keep going on U.S. 31 and you have a choice of restaurants — WOW, which has been open for more than a year, and Willie’s, finally reopened after a long hiatus.
Peek up the street on Belleville and you can see more downtown shops and the work getting under way at the City Park.
But we’ve got work to do as well; keep walking.
As you head up U.S. 31 North, you’ll find more stores offering items unique to Brewton — and customer service to match. Next to Jus Do, the new Shabby Chic Antiques has just opened.
At the shopping center near Winn Dixie, the new Habitat ReStore is open for business — and always willing to accept donations that the store will sell to make money for more Habitat for Humanity projects.
Farther up the highway, a lot of construction is going near the new Walmart — not only is a strip mall with a planned Dollar Tree under way, but a new Gulf Winds Credit Union building is taking shape. And across the street, the Najor family is making major progress on a new restaurant that will incorporate the flavor of the old Oaks menu.
It’s easy just to drive through Brewton and see all of these developments — but you might not pay close enough attention unless you slow down and smell the roses along the way.
