Can you imagine what would happen if every single person in Brewton and East Brewton spent $20 in our community in one day?
With about 8,000 people between us, that would be $160,000 turning over in our community in one day — not only generating sales tax revenue for our two communities, but also putting money in the pockets of business owners and employees who will spend that money here as well.
Most of us could spend more than $20 — and do — daily, right here at home.
But we wanted one day to emphasize the impact that spending locally has on our economy.
So on May 20, we want you to spend $20 at a Brewton or East Brewton business. Spend more than $20 if you can, and spend it at more than one business.
We were inspired by a fellow newspaper, The Aiken (S.C.) Standard, which launched a similar project last month. It was so successful there that the newspaper hopes to hold “$20 on the 20th” events every month.
We were also inspired by local pharmacist Danny Cottrell’s generous $2 bill campaign, which spread $16,000 in $2 bills among local businesses and charities. (If you would like to spend your $20 in $2 bills, I’m sure Danny would appreciate it.)
And if you want to buy a subscription to The Brewton Standard that day, we’re offering a six-month subscription for $20 — that’s a $6 discount on the regular price.
Spending $20 on the 20th is a simple concept, but it shows the immense power of local dollars spent locally.
What does $20 spent in Brewton or East Brewton buy you?
So on May 20, we hope everyone will take time to spend $20. Use it for groceries; clothing; gifts. Get a manicure or a pedicure; get your lawn mowed. Use it as part of a down payment on a car. Just spend it here.
It’s just $20, but what we all get in return is priceless.
