Friday and Saturday were big days for the Jefferson Davis Community College Warhawk baseball team.
One, it gave them their 12th straight win, and 13th win out of 14 games, to end the season with a 27-10 overall record and a 17-10 conference record.
Second, it gave the team their first winning record since the 2005 team went 41-16.
Third, it qualified the Warhawks for the state tournament with the No. 4 seed in the south division.
The Warhawks pounded Wallace State of Selma 17-2 in game one, 12-2 in game two and 29-4 in game three for a total of 58 runs to Selma’s eight.
JDCC had nine doubles, three triples and six homeruns in the series.
Blevins said that up and down his roster, he is confident that each player is ready for the state tournament and what lies ahead of them as a team.
Blevins gave the example of Warhawk player Sean Little who has stepped up his game and really shined on defense over the past three weeks.
Another key component for JDCC is the pitching staff according to Blevins.
Game one: JDCC 17, WSS 2
In the first game of the series Friday afternoon in Brewton, JDCC got four RBIs from Ben Blodgett who was 3-for-5 on the day to improve to 25-19 overall and 15-10 in conference with a 15-run win.
Derek Lowry got the start and the win on the mound in six innings of work and reliever David Dean closed out the game for the Warhawks in the win.
Lowry allowed six hits, one earned run (two total), walked one and struck out five.
Dean struck out one in one inning of work.
Blodgett led the Warhawks at the plate with four RBIs and a double and was followed by C.J. Lindsey who was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, Cody Sanderson who was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a triple and Ryne Phillips who was 3-for-4 with two RBIs.
Terry McClain was 1-for-1 and C.J. Moorer was 1-for-3.
Cody Turner was 1-for-3 and Blake Long was 2-for-3. Taylor Register had an RBI in the win for the Warhawks of JDCC.
JDCC scored two runs in each of the first three innings to grab 6-0.
Wallace cut the lead to 6-2 with two runs in the top of the fourth inning only to see JDCC score four runs of their own to take a 10-2 lead.
JDCC would add five runs in the fifth inning and two in the sixth inning to claim the 17-2 win in seven innings due to the mercy rule.
Game two: JDCC 12, WSS 2
Blodgett stayed with the hot bat in game two of the series and the first game on Saturday as he was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a homerun as JDCC earned their 11th straight win with a 12-2 win.
The win improved JDCC to 26-19 overall and to 16-10 in conference play.
Michael King earned the win on the mound for JDCC. King went five innings and allowed four hits, no earned runs (one total) and struck out five.
Kyle Wyatt and Hunter Norris both pitched one inning for the Warhawks. Wyatt allowed one earned run on three hits, and walked one.
Norris allowed no runs, no hits, no walks and struck out none in one inning of work.
Along with Blodgett, Cody Turner was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs and Lindsey was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
McClain was 2-for-4 with one RBI and a double and Trent Smith was 1-for-2. Ben Negus was 1-for-4 and Moorer was 1-for-3 with one RBI. Sanderson had two RBIs and Blake Long had one.
Game three: JDCC 29, WSS 4
Game three was a game to be remembered by many Warhawks and the whole JDCC team, but the game was Blake Long’s from the start.
Long led the game off with a homerun and in his first five at bats, scored five runs, added two doubles a triple and a single and four RBIs to his cause to hit for the cycle.
JDCC scored 11 runs in the first inning before an out was recorded and banged out 26 total hits, five homeruns, six doubles and a triple as they won by 25 runs, 29-4.
The win capped off a 12-game win streak as JDCC finished the regular season 27-19 and 17-10 in conference play.
JDCC scored 13 runs in the first inning, three in the second inning and 13 runs in the third inning to win in five innings.
Along with Long, Cody Sanderson was 2-for-5 with two homeruns and six RBIs.
Blodgett was 4-for-5 with four RBIs, a double and a homerun and Taylor Register was 3-for-4 with a homerun and two RBIs.
Reid Wynn was 2-for-4 with a double and four RBIs and Sean Little was 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.
Negus was 2-for-4 with a double in the big win for JDCC.
Michael Clay took the win on the mound in two innings of work allowing no runs, one hit, one walk and struck out three.
Shane Ikner, Hunter Brown and Derek Young all pitched in the win for the Warhawks in relief of Clay.
Young struck out the side in the top of the fifth inning to help seal the win.
JDCC will be competing in the state tournament beginning on Saturday at 4 p.m. against the North division’s No. 3 seed Calhoun on the campus of Wallace State Hanceville.
