A little extra time ironing out a few little wrinkles in his pitching technique paid huge dividends for Cubs pitcher Jordan Williams. Williams, who stayed after practice late the previous Friday to work with his coach Ed Williamson, benefited from the extra work and was nearly flawless on the mound Monday night in Brewton Little League baseball action at the Sports Park.
Williams near-perfect performance helped lead the Cubs to an 8-2 win over the Reds in a 9-10-year-old division game just before lightning and storms chased everyone away before the completion of two other 11-12-year-old games.
In one, the Rays and the A’s were tied at 7-7 in the bottom of the fifth inning when play was halted. They were to finish the game Tuesday evening; in the other, the Twins and Phillies were halted before they ever took the field and were supposed to play their game Tuesday night as well.
Three games were played last Thursday – after all games had been washed out by rain Monday and Tuesday last week.
In those three, the Twins edged the Rays 7-2 and the Phillies whipped the A’s 11-0 in upper-division games, while the Red Sox defeated the Cubs 14-6 in the only 9-10-year-old division game of the week.
CUBS 8, REDS 2
In his most masterful pitching performance of the year, Jordan Williams earned the win with six strikeouts and no walks. Williams, in fact, was perfect through three innings of play, sitting down nine straight batters to start the game.
In the meantime, his Cubs teammates – bolstered by the return of Drew Williamson, who had missed most of the year with a broken wrist – built an 8-0 lead through four innings of play. The Cubs benefited from 11 walks and six timely hits to score a pair of runs in each of the first four frames.
The Cub offense was paced by Williams, who led all hitters with a pair of singles; Williamson, Preston Townsend and Nash Diercks added singles, while Cameron Pope blasted an RBI triple.
The Reds, who had six pitchers combine for nine strikeouts, got a hit each from Baylen Parker, O’Neil White, Hunter Brittain and Stokes Jennings.
PHILLIES 11, A’s 0
James Peach and Jones Manning combined to toss a three-hitter as the Phillies moved to 8-2 on the season. Ethan Tyree paced the winning offense with three hits, including a triple and double, while Chris Gehmen added a 3-for-3 effort at the plate.
Christian Mancil had a pair of hits, as did Cole Blackmon and Kyle Davis, who crushed his fifth home run of the season – a grand slam. For the A’s, Kellyn Winn had a triple, while Tyler Reid added a single and Todd Mayo singled and drew a walk.
Due to space limitaions, the Red Sox’s 14-6 win over the Cubs and the Twins 7-2 win over the Rays were not able to be in today’s paper.
