In the first games of the 2009 Brewton Babe Ruth season, the Angels, Red Sox, and Diamondbacks all picked up wins to start their season on the right foot.
The Angels defeated the Dodgers 15-7, while the Red Sox defeated the Twins 8-3. The Diamondbacks defeated the White Sox 5-4.
Angels 15, Dodgers 7
Reid Johnson had a 2-for-4 day at the plate with three RBIs and a homerun to lead the Angels to a 15-7 win over the Dodgers.
The Angels trailed 5-0 after the first inning and 7-1 after the top of the second inning. In the bottom of the inning, the Angels plated seven runs on four hits to take an 8-7 lead.
Leading by one run, the Angels then scored three runs in the fourth inning and four in the fifth inning (three on Johnson’s homerun) to get the eight-run win.
Ryan Hunt picked up the win on the mound for the Angels going five innings and allowing seven runs on seven hits, and striking out seven.
Hunt was 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI, Jacob Fillmore was 2-for-4 with one RBI and Hayden Cooper was 2-for-3.
William Whittle was 2-for-3 with one RBI and Dillon Anthony was 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
Cody Smith was 2-for-3 in the win.
For the Dodgers, Kieon Smith was 2-for-3 with one RBI and Tyler Dehoff was 1-for-3.
Austin Redash had an RBI and Shawn Odom was 1-for-2.
Odom took the loss on the mound was he went 1 2/3 inning allowing eight runs (six earned) on four hits, struck out two, walked four and hit one.
Red Sox 8, Twins 3
The Red Sox’s Hayden Cooper allowed three runs in the first inning and none after the first inning while striking out eight to lead the Red Sox to an 8-3 win over the Twins.
Cooper went the complete seven innings allowed two earned runs on eight hits, and walked one in the win.
Both teams scored three runs in the first inning and the Red Sox added three more in the second inning to take a 6-3 lead.
Leading by three runs, the Red Sox added two more in the fifth inning to take the win 8-3.
Monterrius Culliver was 1-for-3 in the win with a double and an RBI and Curtis Glaize was 1-for-2 with and RBI.
Evan Clayton was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Caleb Stewart was 1-for-3. Brewer Murphy was 1-for-2 in the win.
Dylan Godwin took the loss on the mound for the Twins. Godwin allowed four earned runs (six total) on four hits, walked two and struck out two.
At the plate for the Twins, Godwin was 2-for-3 and Kameron Winn was 1-for-3.
Kevin Davis was 2-for-3 along with Wes Maddox and Logan Williamson and Shawn Lucas were both 1-for-3 with Lucas having one RBI.
Diamondbacks 5,
White Sox 4
Conner Denton went the complete game on the mound for the Diamondbacks allowing four runs on 10 hits, striking out 13 and walking two as the Diamondbacks squeaked out a 5-4 win over the White Sox.
The Diamondbacks held an early 3-0 after the third inning only to see the White Sox tie the game with one run in the fourth inning and two in the second inning.
The D-backs scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning off a two-RBI single from Rob Stokes.
With the D-backs leading 5-3, the White Sox scored one runs in the sixth inning to cut the lead to 5-4, but could not add another run as the D-backs won 5-4.
For the D-backs in the win, Louis Miller was 1-for-2 and Collin Graves was 1-for-3. Ethan Tyree was 1-for-3 along with Stokes who had two RBIs.
Taylor Ballard was 1-for-2 with a double.
For the White Sox, Gary McGraw took the loss on the mound in relief of starter Keith Bradley.
Bradley went four innings and allowed no earned runs (three total) on three hits, struck out seven and walked one.
McGraw went two innings and allowed two earned runs on two hits, struck out three and walked two.
Bradley was 3-for-4 with two RBIs in the loss and McGraw was 1-for-3. Tyler Etheridge was 2-for-3 with one RBI and Dominique Jackson was 1-for-2.
Damion Williams was 2-for-3 and Nick Adams and Dedrionne Lee were both 1-for-3.
