Walkers were waiting in line at the YMCA at noon Friday when the walking track was opened after being shut down for renovations for the past several weeks.
A group of walkers stopped to cut the yellow ribbon before taking to the newly finished walking and running lanes.
YMCA business manager Cathy Green said she thought the public was going to enjoy the new surface.
When the Y opened in 1990, the track was covered with carpet, but in the intervening 19 years, the carpet had taken a beating.
Green said the new floor is Dynasport indoor flooring that consists of a unique monolithic blend of urethane covered with a two-component polyure-thane layer with a mat finish on top. It is springy to the feet and should allow walkers a good walking or running surface.
It has superior shock absorption and energy return and meets NCAA and IAAF requirements.
