For recent T.R. Miller graduate and baseball player Sam Sharpe, it is for the love of the game that encouraged him to walk on at Jefferson Davis Community College in Brewton on the baseball team.
Sharpe was selected to play in the East-West Lions club baseball game a couple of weeks ago at JDCC and he let Warhawk head coach Darrell Blevins know then that he decided to play.
Sharpe, a top-10 graduate of T.R. Miller this year, was a three-sport letter winner his senior season.
Sharpe played football and baseball for the Tigers, and also competed in track.
Sharpe said staying out of trouble is the best way to keep your grades up in school.
While Sharpe and the 2009 T.R. Miller Tiger baseball team had a tough year with an 8-11 record, the 2009 version of the JDCC Warhawk baseball team posted their best record in recent years and advanced to the state tournament.
Of the three sports Sharpe played in high school, he said he preferred one.
While baseball did struggle this year for the Tigers, football made it to the semifinals and track won the state championship.
Sharpe threw the javelin on the track team this season for the Tigers.
As for throwing the javelin during the same season as throwing a baseball, Sharpe did not see much difference in the two.
Sharpe said he started playing baseball when he was barely old enough to know what baseball was.
So what goes through his head and mind when he is on the mound?
With high school now complete, Sharpe has one thing left to do this summer before starting college in the fall.
Sharpe will join former W.S. Neal Eagle pitcher William Shell at JDCC next season.
