In their first game of the 10- and 11-year-old district tournament in East Brewton Monday night, the Brewton All Stars found themselves in a pitching duel with Covington County.
That was until the fifth inning.
In the fifth inning, Brewton exploded for seven run on four hits and three Covington County errors to take an 8-0 lead after holding a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning and claim the opening round win.
In that inning, Brewton’s Trippe Floyd connected for a one out grand slam to turn a 2-0 Brewton lead into a 6-0 lead.
Brewton would add two more runs in the inning on a two-RBI single from Jonathon Lucas.
Those runs would be more than enough for Brewton as pitcher Jared Cooper went the distance on the mound for Brewton to earn the win.
Cooper went the complete game six innings and allowed no runs on three hits, walked three (all in the first inning), and struck out six.
After walking the bases full in the first inning with one out, Cooper struck out the final two batters of the inning to preserve the shutout.
Cooper would then allow only three more Covington County batters on base after the first inning.
Offensively for Brewton, Floyd led the way as he went 3-for-3 with four RBIs, two doubles and a homerun in the win.
Jake Najor was 1-for-3 along with Brooks Brown, Cole Blackmon, and Austin Holmes.
Lucas was 2-for-3 with two RBIs in the win.
Cooper and Ethan Tyree both had an RBI each in the eight-run win for Brewton.
With the win, Brewton advanced to play Escambia County Tuesday night at 6 p.m. in East Brewton. Escambia County had an opening round bye.
