Layoffs and plant closings in the region have left many wondering where to turn.
Brewton has not seen as much unemployment as some surrounding areas, but for those who have lost their jobs, several local churches and organizations are offering help.
The Christ Kingdom Ministry Center, located at 1602 Douglas Avenue, in the old K-Mart Shopping Center, is hosting a series of programs to help those in need.
A group of partners are coming together to approach the problems facing citizens and give them hope for the future.
Wayne Cain, who is the administrative pastor of the center, said the partners were excited to help the community.
Amy Cooley, director of RSVP — a partner in the workshops — said she and RSVP’s Marion Collins are excited about the programs.
Partners in the workshops are Alabama Power, American Red Cross, Brewton Public Library, Christ Kingdom Ministry Center, Community Action Agency, Department of Human Resources, County Extension Office, Department of Industrial Relations, Escambia County RSVP, Flomaton United Methodist Church, Goodwill Easter Seals, Hope Place and Jefferson Davis Community College. They will have small booths set up around the room to answer any questions.
The free workshops will be held on Mondays, July 13, 27, and Aug. 10, from 1 to 3:30 p.m.
The first workshop, scheduled for Monday, will focus on work ethics and job readiness skills. The next workshop scheduled for July 27 will be about the community resources for help in energy and how to stretch food dollars. The final workshop will be “Hope for Tomorrow,” to help set goals, budgeting and programs to educate.
