When I began covering sports here in Brewton almost two years ago, I was told this past season when I covered my first state championship team that I would always remember it.
Only time will tell if that is true tonight, but that same can and will be said about a special bunch of players and coaches after what happened Friday night in East Brewton at the 11- and 12-year-old all star district tournament.
After falling to Opp earlier in the tournament, it looked like when East Brewton and Opp had to meet up again, that it could happen again.
But that night saw a 2-1 win for East Brewton to force a deciding game for the championship.
On Friday, things started great for East Brewton with a three-run homerun from Rob Jones. Tyler Joyner kept Opp off-balanced the whole night and when Opp scored their lone run, Jones responded again with another homerun.
Heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, you could feel the intensity and the excitement getting greater and greater with every thud and speeding beats of the hearts.
Not only the hearts of the players and coaches, but the fans and even my heart as a sports writer covering the game.
Then came the first out and the second. The fans rose to their feet with claps and cheers and the infield gathered behind Joyner at the mound for a brief meeting with smiles on their faces.
I did not know for sure if this would be the first championship or not for the team so as I asked and found out it was, I crept into the dugout hoping not to “jinx” the inevitable.
Then the third out came and the kids and everyone went crazy. Even head coach Danny Parker dove in on the dog pile (though I missed a picture of that).
After the awards and a banner presentation, we walked out to the scoreboard for a picture and Parker could be heard telling his team that they would be remembered as they just made history as the first team ever to win a district championship for East Brewton.
Enjoy the moment. You will be remembered forever and you will remember your first championship.
I want to say congrats to the team for this accomplishment and to all our teams on great seasons.
To the teams still playing and going to play at state, best of luck and safe travels to everyone.
Out of the nine total All Star teams we had competing this summer, six of our teams will be and are heading to state tournaments in different parts of the state.
Brewton Little League sent two teams, East Brewton sent one and all of the Babe Ruth teams advanced.
That is a remarkable number of teams that we have going.
Due to all the teams going and to the brackets that I have seen showing that all start about the same weeks and days, and the distances, I cannot attend all games.
If possible, I would appreciate  all coaches who have teams going to state, either send in or have someone send in stats and scores via email or fax or by phone to me so I can have your information in the paper.
I can be reached by email at sports@brewtonstandard.com, by fax at 251-867-4877 and by phone at 251-867-4876. If I am not in the office, you can leave a voicemail.
I know you will be busy, but if you could help me out with this, I would appreciate it.
Thanks in advance.
Until we meet again here or out in the world of sports, God bless.
