What an All Star season the Brewton area has seen in the past several weeks. Of the nine total teams that we had, six of our teams advanced to the state tournament with five of them winning their respective district titles.
That is a remarkable accomplishment and all our teams and coaches and fans should be applauded for this.
Of the six teams that we have that are going to state, four of the teams begin play today and one team will begin tomorrow courtesy of an opening round bye.
The sixth team that we had, the Brewton Little League 9- and 10-year-olds, suffered their second loss in their state tournament in Mobile on Tuesday and were eliminated.
All three Brewton Babe Ruth teams made the state tournament and will begin play today.
The 13-year-olds begin play in Satsuma today at 10 a.m. and the 14-year-olds begin play in Huntsville at 12:30 p.m.
The 15-year-olds begin play in Tallassee at 4 p.m.
East Brewton’s 11- and 12-year-old Little League team begins play tonight at 8 p.m. also in Huntsville.
The last team that is in state will be the Brewton 10- and 11-year-old All Stars.
They will begin play on Sunday at 8 p.m. in Jackson.
Whew! That’s a lot of games going on at the same time.
Best of luck to all teams and safe travels. Lets bring the state championship back to Brewton.
I still want to encourage coaches, scorebook keepers or anyone interested to help in sending in state game stats and scores to me.
I can be reached by email at sports@brewtonstandard.com or by fax at 251-867-4877 or at the office at 251-867-4876.
I need information by noon on Tuesday for Wednesday’s paper and noon on Friday for Saturday’s papers.
Thanks for your help in this matter.
In other sporting news, T.R. Miller’s Keydra Shedrone and Nakiya Smith also took part in the AHSAA’s sports week in Huntsville.
The T.R. Miller Lady Tiger duo that led T.R. Miller to their first state basketball championship since 2002 this past season, played for the South girls basketball team Thursday night.
The South team fell to the North squad 50-45.
The North girls outscored the South 14-6 in the third quarter to earn the win.
Smith had one rebound and two points and two steals in the game for the South in 10 minutes of playing time.
Shedrone had one steal in six minutes.
Both Shedrone and Smith will return to T.R. Miller this season.
As far as high school football is concerned, I know everyone looks forward to the start of practice and the season.
We here in the south enjoy our football: high school, college, and the NFL.
As a fellow sportswriter, we have been circulating emails around the state getting ready for our Alabama Sportswriters Association (ASWA) preseason football poll.
I have sent my poll in and the polls are set to be released on Sunday, August 2.
It is almost here! Can you smell it?
I can’t wait. It will be here before you know it.
Previews of our football team’s summer workouts and practices will soon be featured in the paper.
Until we meet again here or out in the world of sports, God bless.
