As one of the coaches for the 9-10 year-old All-Stars, I would like to take an opportunity to say thank you to such a great community. Brewton has proven over and over its appreciation and support of youth sports, but in my first experience at the all-star level, I was amazed at the number of groups of people who stepped forward to make our experience one that will never be forgotten. Being named to the all-star team to represent the 9-10 age division was a thrill, but to win the District 5 Championship in Opp for the first time in five years and earn the opportunity to play in a state tournament was certainly something we will never forget.
However, none of that would have been possible without the support of the following: The Brewton City Commission (Frank Cotten, Gary Barton, Fred Barton, Joe Watson and Dennis Dunaway); the Escambia County Commission (David Stokes, Wiley Tait, Larry White, Raymond Wiggins and Brandon Smith); Roger Chapman of the Brewton Recreation Board; Little League president Steve Parker and Dan Thomas from First Exchange Bank. Because you cared about our kids, they were able to enjoy one of the great experiences of playing Little League baseball.
Next, thank you to The Brewton Standard — and in particular Adam Robinson — for the great coverage and pictures; and to Dennis Dunaway, Jacob Cannon and LuDon Simmons at WEBJ Radio. Thanks for taking the time to give us something to read and listen to that we will remember for years to come.
To coaches Ed Williamson, Wesley Brittain and David Jennings; thanks for all the time, teaching, patience and encouragement you poured into our kids. They’ve learned lessons from you that will last a lifetime.
And to our parents and families, who have put aside plans, vacations and other summer activities to be at practices, make signs, cheer and encourage your sons. You truly made it a “family affair.”
To the entire community of Brewton. The number of you who drove to Opp and then Mobile to watch us play and cheer us on, or those who listened on the radio and supported us is astounding. You’ll never know what it meant for our kids to look up in the stands and see so many people there, from church pastors to schoolmates to neighbors and friends.
And, finally, let me share my appreciation to the 12 kids who made this experience so memorable: Tyler Baxter, Hunter Brittain, Lane Clark, Stokes Jennings, Troy Lewis, Garrett Salter, Russell Smith, O’Neil White, Jordan Williams, Drew Williamson, Caleb Winton and Joshua Winton. You represented Brewton with class and character and gave our community every reason to be proud.
