W.S. Neal Elementary School teachers and administrators will be busy until the last minute cleaning the school and preparing for the first day day of school on Tuesday.
Crews have been installing a new heating and cooling system at the school, and the work is coming down to the wire, but Knott said classrooms would be ready for students.
Brewton City Schools students will begin the school year Monday morning, while Escambia County students start on Tuesday.
W.S. Neal Elementary normally has an open house the day before school starts so that parents can greet teachers and drop off supplies, but Knott said that wouldn’t be possible this year because of the need to clean up and organize classrooms.
But on Tuesday, the school will be open to parents, who are welcome to meet their students’ teachers.
W.S. Neal High School is also looking forward to some changes this year — and one in particular that students need to be aware of, Assistant Principal Patty Frazier said.
Students are not allowed to have cell phones on campus, Frazier said. Previously, students involved in extracurricular activities were able to keep them, but now they are banned for everyone.
Three new teachers will also be at W.S. Neal High School this year: Jason Blaney will be in the science department and Duree Madden in special education, and Susan Smith will be returning to teach 12th grade English.
Frazier said school officials are looking to have a good year.
