Construction has begun to fulfill another “dream” of the Poarch Band of Creek Indians, a museum showcasing their history and culture.
Historical preservation officer and cultural authority director Robert Thrower said the construction of the museum has been 25 years in the making.
Thrower said the building would be multi-functional and finished in phases.
As part of the archival program will also be the cultural authority offices, which will begin a transitional move as early as next month.
The museum is not anticipated to open until the spring of 2010 a move Thrower attributes to the careful consideration going into all aspects of its creation.
Thrower and his team are taking a storytelling approach to the museum and are moving away from the typical museum setup of cases and displays with what Thrower called a “full sensory experience” that includes both interactive visual and audio components.
While Thrower and the Tribe are keeping many details under wraps until closer to the grand opening, he did give away one big detail.
Thrower said more than just a museum, the facility is the Tribe’s opportunity to share and display their culture and history with pride.
