The election of Larry White as president of the Association of County Commissions of Alabama gives Escambia County an ear in the state’s largest lobbying organization for counties, commission Chairman David Stokes said.
White, who serves on the Escambia County Commission, was elected president of the state association last week during the ACCA convention. He has been involved with the organization since the mid-1990s.
White said he is “honored” to serve as president of the organization, which he said works hard on behalf of all counties in the state, including Escambia.
Stokes said Escambia County commissioners have already begun discussing ideas with White.
Among the ACCA issues that have helped Escambia County was a 2000 road and bridge bond issue that allowed Escambia County to replace a dozen structurally deficient bridges, White said.
Issues that White hopes to work on as president of the organization are health care costs and road and bridge funding.
And with everyone experiencing budget shortfalls in a tight economy, “it’s important to make sure we don’t lose any funding,” White said.
White’s fellow Escambia County commissioners attended the ceremony at which he was installed as president.
Stokes said the Association of County Commissions has always helped Escambia County with local legislation and other issues of importance to the county.
