As part of a Click It or Ticket campaign, extra  Brewton Police officers will be on patrol and manning roadblocks to help keep drunk drivers and other traffic violators off the streets.
McGougin said the purpose of the beefed up patrols and roadblocks will be to focus on DUIs and other traffic violations.
McGougin said he wanted all drivers to be aware of the upcoming efforts of the department and be aware that traffic violations will not be tolerated.
Brewton police officers are part of a statewide effort to crack down on drunk drivers, according to Department of Public Safety Director Col. J. Christopher Murphy.
Murphy said troopers, along with local and county law enforcement and safety agencies across the state will continue to work on an intensive impaired driving crackdown through Labor Day
Murphy said troopers also plan to target violations that contribute to traffic crashes, including speeding, following too closely, improper passing and failure to signal.
The official 78-hour Labor Day travel period begins at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4, and ends at midnight on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 7. Last year eight people died in traffic crashes in Alabama during the 78-hour travel period. At least two of the crash victims died as the result of alcohol-related crashes, and four of the six vehicle occupants were not using safety restraints.
McGougin said the roadblocks throughout the Brewton area would be focusing on the proper use of seat belts, drunk drivers and a variety of other traffic violations.
