Despite a protest from the next lowest bidder, the consulting firm overseeing work on a new hangar and taxiway at the Brewton Airport said Tuesday that a construction firm hired for the job is qualified.
Bobby Odom of Volkert and Associates said that SC Stagner Construction of Saraland had been awarded the low bid. Another contractor, Ladas Construction of Chickasaw, protested to the state General Contractors Board that Stagner did not meet the requirement that it should be licensed to do at least 51 percent of the job.
But the board said Stagner could revise its license — and, in fact, the company was already in the process of doing so.
City Attorney Ed Hines said he trusted the opinion of Volkert with regard to the legality of the decision.
The city is building new T-hangars and a taxiway with a combination of federal and state grants.
