Schools pass budget|Proration could be looming

The Escambia County School Board passed its budget for the 2010 fiscal year Thursday — but it might have to be amended not long after the new fiscal year begins.
School superintendents across Alabama have been told to expect proration again this fall. The Legislature budgets for the coming year in the spring, and tax revenues have not been meeting expectations. State Superintendent Joe Morton has said proration could be around 6 percent.
The Escambia County Schools budget for the coming year lists more than $47.2 million in revenues and just under $48.5 million in expenses and fund use.
In other business, Randy Rushton, a representative with Frazier Lanier Company, brought information to the board concerning the refunding of a bond issue.
Following the board’s approval of the sale, Rushton praised the board and system for their status in the financial community.
Rushton explained the sale of the bond was similar to refinancing a home and that the payoff date would not change.
