A Brewton woman was killed early Wednesday morning when she apparently walked in front of a train on the tracks about a half-mile from her Martin Luther King Drive home, Brewton police said.
Brewton Police Chief Monte McGougin said the body of Diane Gloria Gulley, 59, of 876 Martin Luther King Drive was found on the tracks around 5 a.m.
A CSX train conductor had called authorities just after 4:30 a.m. to say he had seen a body on the tracks,  McGougin said. The conductor did not know whether the body was a person or an animal.
When sheriff’s investigators and police arrived on the scene, they initially did not know whether they were dealing with a homicide or other incident, McGougin said.
But when CSX officials reviewed footage recorded by cameras mounted on trains that had been through the area early Wednesday morning, video showed Gulley walking onto the tracks in front of the train, McGougin said.
The train that hit Gulley did not stop, and CSX said no one on the train realized someone had been hit, he said.
Gulley’s car was also found near the tracks, McGougin said.
Gulley’s body has been sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences for an autopsy.
Brewton Police were assisted at the scene in the investigation by the Escambia County Sheriff’s Department, FBI, Century Correctional Institute’s K-9 unit and CSX officials.
