When a group of World War II veterans set off on an Honor Flight from Mobile last week, Brewton’s Lee Otts was among them.
Otts, who went to France in 1944 as a second lieutenant in G Company, was part of a group of veterans flown to Washington, D.C., to tour the World War II Memorial. The Honor Flight project aims to let as many veterans of that war see if before it is too late. According to Honor Flight organizers, more than 1,000 World War II veterans die every day.
Otts, who missed a trip earlier this summer, said the flight was tiring but enjoyable.
The group left from Mobile on Sept. 16, and had a special gift to read on the flight.
The group was welcomed to Washington by former U.S. Sen. Bob Dole and Alabama’s Senate delegation, Richard Shelby and Jeff Sessions.
Honor Flight Network is a non-profit organization that was created solely to honor America’s veterans for all their sacrifices. They transport the heroes to Washington, D.C., to visit the memorial as thanks for their service and dedication. Top priority is given to those who fought in World War II, as there are less of them every day.
