Sylvia Curtiss, who grew up in the Mississippi Delta and knows a thing or two about Southern cooking, is getting a chance to put her expertise to work.
Curtiss and her fiance, Bobby Henry, opened Sylvia’s Kitchen on the corner of Harold Street and Forrest Avenue last month.
An empty building led Curtiss and Henry to consider opening their own restaurant.
Curtiss is also the manager of the Wind Chase, Summer Chase and Village East Apartments on Williamson Street in East Brewton. She has been able to call in the help of her assistant manager at the apartments, Tameeka Briggs, to be the assistant manager at the  restaurant.
Curtiss has also hired a familiar face to be the manager in charge. Roshelle Stewart has been in the restaurant business for 15 years. She said she knows what kind of foods people like in this area and they are going on the menu.
The restaurant will be open seven days a week from 5 a.m. until 10 p.m. serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. A lunch buffet will be served Sunday through Friday, and serve two meats, four vegetables and homemade pies for dessert. A buffet lunch will be $6.95. It will be open on Saturday but no buffet will be served then.
Curtiss said they are serving up only the freshest foods. “Everything will be fresh, and we will have steaks and hamburgers to order. We make the S.K. Classic cheeseburger deal with fries and a drink for $5.”
Other items on the menu will include hamburger steak, country fried steak, crispy fried catfish, shrimp, chicken tenders, salads and sandwiches.
