Anglers of all ages are invited to go fishing courtesy of the Fishers of Men Alabama South chapter and the Escambia County Cooperative Extension Service. However, sponsorships for the event are still needed to make the day a success.
The event, which is scheduled at the pond on the campus of Jefferson Davis Community College on Oct. 17, could see more than 200 anglers participating.
Allen Couch, a FOM ministry partner, said the event is expecting to see a large number of children fishing this year.
Couch said sponsorships and donations from area groups and businesses make the event possible. Donations are still needed to ensure fish, tackle and food are available at the event, he said.
Couch said rods and reels are provided for those who don’t have the equipment to fish and some rods and reels are given away during the day.
Typically, participants in the event have an opportunity to receive a rod and reel as well as enjoy snacks including hot dogs and all the trimmings, Couch said.
Some sponsors have already committed to assisting with the event, Couch said.
Couch said 1,800 pounds of catfish from Fuqua’s Catfish Farm will be placed into the pond to be ready for the event.
