For the fifth straight time in the fifth Escambia County tournament, the T.R. Miller Lady Tiger volleyball team claimed their fifth championship Saturday in Brewton.
The Lady Tigers have now won every county tournament since the tournament began in 2005.
The Lady Tigers began play against Flomaton at 9 a.m. and the tournament was set to play despite the T.R. Miller gymnasium having no electricity Saturday morning.
Power was restored to the gym at noon right before the third game and the tournament went off without any delays.
The tournament championship allowed T.R. Miller to improve their overall record to 17-2 with a 3-0 record in the tournament.
Flomaton took second place with a 2-1 record, losing only to T.R. Miller. W.S. Neal finished in third place with a 1-2 record, and Escambia County finished fourth with a 0-3 record.
T.R. Miller swept all their matches in the tournament as they defeated Flomaton 25-23 and 25-16 to get the win.
In the Lady Tigers’ second game against W.S. Neal, T.R. Miller won 25-22 and 25-14 before defeating Escambia County 25-13 and 25-9 to take the championship.
The final game against Escambia County proved to be the Lady Tigers’ easiest win of the tournament.
Leigh Margaret Bostic led in game one against Flomaton with four service points and one kill and Janel McCorvey led in game two with five points, two kills, and one block.
Against W.S. Neal, McCrovey led in game one with five service points, one ace, and one kill and Natalie Neal led in game two with five points.
Against Escambia County, Elizabeth Nelson led with four points and one ace and in game two, Leah Brundidge led with nine straight points and one ace to seal the tournament championship.
On Monday at the class 3A area one tournament in Daphne at Bayside Academy, the Lady Tigers lost to Cottage Hill 3-2 to end their season with a 17-3 overall record.
T.R. Miller lost 26-24 in game one before taking game two 25-19. T.R. Miller lost game three 25-17, but one game four 25-14 before losing the fifth game 15-9.
