Students will stay home from school on Monday for a very good reason — so their parents can go instead.
Brewton City Schools and Escambia County Schools will observe Parenting Day, an opportunity for parents to visit the school and schedule parent-teacher conferences.
Brewton Elementary School — and we suspect all of the other schools as well — are hoping for 100 percent participation from parents.
Knowing that not all parents can participate on Monday, many schools welcome parents’ scheduling conferences throughout the week so that they can talk about the students’ progress.
Parent involvement is key to students’ success. As much pressure as we put on teachers, schools and the students themselves, partnership with parents can make a huge difference in student achievement.
Schools have scheduled special activities, with demonstrations and tours planned at several county schools, along with the opportunities for parent-teacher conferences.
Programs include everything from mobile laptop lab training to panels on underage drinking and attention deficit disorder. Parents will be able to find a wealth of information about their children and their schools.
We encourage all parents to take part in Parenting Day, or to find time in the next week to set up a parent-teacher conference.
Our children need help from all of us to succeed.
