Escambia County sheriff’s officials have arrested a man they say is an accomplice in an attempted home invasion and robbery that turned deadly last week.
Hunter Madden, 24, of Brewton, was arrested Wednesday and charged with burglary in the first degree. He is being held on $50,000 bond in the Escambia County Correctional Facility.
Chief Deputy Mike Lambert said Madden took Jeremy Paul McCall to a house on U.S. 31 North early Monday morning. McCall, while masked, broke into the house with a gun, apparently attempting to rob the couple who lived there.
Instead, the 81-year-old homeowner shot McCall in the forehead and killed him.
Madden was not at the house when authorities arrived after McCall was shot, Lambert said.
The homeowners, whom sheriff’s officials have declined to identify, have not been charged in the incident, and Lambert said no charges are expected. The case has been turned over to a grand jury.
Alabama law states that a law enforcement agency may not arrest an individual involved with a similar violent act if they believe it was justified, Lambert said.
