April Nicholson hopes her family spends Thanksgiving in their new home on Hollinger Street thanks to the work of dozens of volunteers with the Escambia County Habitat for Humanity organization.
Alecia Glaize, executive director for the organization, said the building project, which began Friday, should be completed over four weekends.
Nicholson said it would be nice to spend the holiday in her new home.
Nicholson and her two sons, Tyrese and Markel, are currently living in a mobile home in Brewton, but will enjoy their new home soon thanks to some hard work with Habitat.
Nicholson’s work with Habitat is part of the sweat equity required for potential homeowners before their home can be constructed.
The Friday morning kick-off of the project was opened with devotion and prayer by Father Gary Baldwin, priest for St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church.
Rusty Miller, building coordinator for projects with Habitat, said the home will be built in such a way that grants for the group may be possible in the future.
Miller said the home would be giving long-term grants of a sort to the homeowner.
The building project will continue through the weekend with work today from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m., Glaize said.
Additional workdays are scheduled for the weekends of Oct. 24-25, Oct. 31-Nov. 1, and Nov. 7-8.
