The annual Battle of Murder Creek Blood Drive sponsored by D.W. McMillan Hospital broke donation records during collection last week.
Lisa Nordmeyer, event co-coordinator and laboratory manager at McMillan, said the response to the annual drive was overwhelming this year. Lynn Ellis, lab tech, also worked in coordinating the event.
to everyone who was a part, by donating blood or by donating time.”
The annual blood drive encourages fans of W.S. Neal and T.R. Miller to donate in their school’s name. Ellis said those donating for W.S. Neal outnumbered those donating for T.R. Miller for the 2009 drive.
Those who donated blood were entered into a drawing to receive four Battle of Murder Creek game tickets with a set presented to fans of each team.
Those donating were also entered into a drawing for $25 gift cards.
Ticket winners were Dr. Jimmy Adkisson and Danny Joyner. Gift card winners were Shirley Jackson and Martha Dawn Singleton. Each person who donated was automatically entered into a drawing for a car that will be given away in January.
Nordmeyer said several businesses in Brewton and East Brewton contributed to make the event a success.
As a result of donations, W.S. Neal High School will be receiving a special monetary gift to help with school supplies.
Businesses making the school supply fund possible include Peach Automotive; Otts, Moore, Coale and Godwin; Pepsi-Cola; Brewton Chamber of Commerce and Channel 6 with Roger Chapman; Mayor Ted Jennings; Squeegee Stitch; and Graphix.
Plans are already in the works for next year’s event, Nordmeyer said. The work done by employees at D.W. McMillan Hospital make the event possible every year.
