Mrs. Mattie Ruth Thomas, 79, died Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009, at her residence. She was a native of Oak Hill and a resident of Brewton. She was an active member of First Saint Siloam Missionary Baptist Church. She had worked as a senior cook in several restaurants, and at Southern Normal High School for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Lee Thomas.
She is survived by four daughters, Minnie Stallworth of Chicago, Ill., Erma (Clint) Bryant of Patterson, N.J.; Jacqueline (Jerry) Rudolph of Brewton, and Tonya (Dempsey) Daniels of Japan; five sons, Michael Stallworth, Tony Wilmer and Leander Wilmer, all of Montgomery, Jonathan (Clementine) Stallworth and Marvin (Lynn) Stallworth, both of Brewton; a step-son, Jesse (Sheila) Wilmer Jr. of Cincinnati, Ohio; six brothers, Willie Stallworth of Mexia, Johnny (Grace) Stallworth of Birmingham, Roy (Josephine) Stallworth of Oak Hill, James (Alice) Stallworth of Cedartown, Ga., Narvie (Dorothy) Stallworth and Arthur (Diane) Stallworth, both of Brunswick Ga.; three sisters, Arvetta Dixon and Nancy Lymon, both of Brunswick, and Bernice Phillips of Oak Hill; a special aunt, Mattie Coleman of Brewton; two loyal friends, Rosa Williams and Katie Ruth White, both of Brewton; 17 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three god-children and a host of other family and friends.
Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 9, at Second Saint Siloam Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Nehemiah Cooler and the Rev. Willie J. Blue officiating. Burial followed at Piney Grove Church Cemetery with Presley-Fluker Funeral Home directing.
