Brewton merchants plan to kick off the holiday shopping season with a special event Thursday, and this year several businesses are taking part that have not participated in the past.
Sponsored by the Brewton Area Chamber of Commerce, the Holiday Kickoff will feature sales, special activities, performances and refreshments at several businesses throughout Brewton. A family holiday movie will be shown on the new outdoor movie theater at Burnt Corn Creek Park at 5:30 p.m. The Holiday Kickoff will take place from 4 to 7 p.m., giving stores a chance to open after hours.
Badcock Furniture, which moved to South Boulevard earlier this year, is taking part for the first time.
Owner Mike Hart said he hopes customers will come to enjoy an open house and see the gift ideas the store has to offer, including some under $20.
Chamber officials said they were glad to see so many businesses take part in the event. In addition to retail stores, banks and other service-oriented businesses will hold open houses.
In addition to the open houses and the outdoor movie, Director Schwayn Bradley and the Christ Kingdom Ministry Center Choir will perform in the City Park from 6 to 7 p.m. Their performance is sponsored by Bank of Brewton, BankTrust, First Exchange Bank, McMillan Wingate and NDI.
The Brewton Elementary School Choir will perform at 6 p.m. at The Changing Seasons, and Brewton Dance Studio will perform on the boardwalk outside Southern Heirlooms.
