A Brewton man was transported to D.W. McMillan Hospital Thursday afternoon with injuries sustained after his vehicle collided with a school bus on Lowery Landing Road.
Richard Frederick Capers, 30, was injured when his 1990 Chevrolet van collided with a 2003 International school bus driven by Margie Baggett. Baggett was not injured in the incident according to Alabama State Troopers officials.
Bill West, W.S. Neal bus shop supervisor, said the students on the bus at the time were not injured in the accident.
West said the van driven by Capers struck the school bus in the rear.
School officials said Baggett, who was not injured in the accident, followed protocol after the wreck.
Escambia County Assistant Superintendent Randall Little said Baggett saw the car coming and realized it wouldn’t be able to stop, so she immediately began to apply her training to the situation.
Officers with the Escambia County Sheriff’s Department and the Alabama State Troopers responded to the scene as well as members of the Appleton Volunteer Fire Department, West said.
A second bus was sent to transport the students, and parents were notified, Little said.
Capers’ condition was not known at press time.
