Recently, Monica Shockley wrote a letter about the comparable effects of alcohol and marijuana.
While she was accurate regarding the effects of both, I fear she did not go far enough with her conclusion.
It is true that marijuana and alcohol are both harmful, however her article failed to mention the effects of alcohol accurately. Alcohol damages and ultimately destroys the liver, kidneys, esophagus, and stomach. Alcohol is responsible for far more fatalities than marijuana and yet Ms. Shockley drew only the conclusion that marijuana should stay illegal and we should try to stop it.
If Ms. Shockley were truly interested in the comparable facts she would have proffered the suggestion that perhaps the 18th amendment is due for a a comeback. If we are to safely guard the community through legislation then we should not limit it to drugs.
It is high time that we removed the element of choice from the lives of Americans and forbid what they are clearly not capable of managing on their own. I think Ms. Shockley would agree.
