The Bible contains many verses admonishing Christians to feed the hungry.
Two Brewton area churches are taking the verses to heart by offering a Thanksgiving feast to those who are hungry or are in need.
Divine Temple in East Brewton and Christ Kingdom Ministries in Brewton will both be preparing and serving meals on Thanksgiving Day for those who are unable to prepare for themselves.
Divine Temple will be serving from the East Brewton Civic Center on Forrest Avenue beginning at 11 a.m. Christ Kingdom Ministries will be serving from their fellowship hall at the church located on Douglas Avenue in the old Winn-Dixie shopping center beginning at 11 a.m. as well.
Doug Greer, pastor at Divine Temple, said the event is something that has been beneficial to the community and to the church.
Greer said more than 40 people from his congregation are involved in making the feast possible.
For members of Christ Kingdom Ministries, this year’s serving of a Thanksgiving meal will mark their first time for such an undertaking.
Sandra Floyd, an organizer for Christ Kingdom Ministries, said her idea to feed a few families in the community has grown into the plan that it has become.
Floyd said some help for preparation has come from Red Cross workers as well as members of the congregation.
Janet Byrd, an organizer with Divine Temple, said the large feast being prepared by her fellow church members is a labor of love.
Byrd said her volunteers will be busy preparing enough food to feed more than 200 for Thanksgiving Day.
For those who come to the Divine Temple’s feast in East Brewton, tables will be set up for those who want to sit down for their meal.
Christ Kingdom’s fellowship hall will also be open for those who want to enjoy the meal with members of the congregation, Floyd said.
The meals prepared by both churches are done entirely from donations.
Neither church is asking for any payment for the meals provided.
Floyd said her church is happy to offer the meals to those in the community at no charge. “We are not asking for any money,” Floyd said. “We have had a lot of donations that have made this possible. We don’t quite know how many people to expect but we are happy to be able to do this.”
Each church will begin serving the holiday meal at 11 a.m. and will continue serving until the food is gone.
The menu for Christ Kingdom Ministries includes turkey, ham, collards, green beans, potato salad, cranberry sauce, pecan pie, sweet potato pie and a variety of cakes, tea, and coffee.
The menu for Divine Temple’s feast includes turkey, dressing, dumplings, sweet potato casserole, cranberry sauce, rolls, a variety of cakes and drinks.
Greer said the offer of a nice Thanksgiving meal is extended to those emergency workers who may be on duty for the holiday.
