Angels are hovering around Brewton and East Brewton searching for a Christmas friend.
The Greater Brewton Area Chamber of Commerce has placed angels on a tree at Walmart and at area banks in hopes of helping children in the community enjoy a brighter Christmas.
Michelle Hart, administrative assistant for the Chamber, said there are hundreds of children in the area that will benefit from the Christmas project this year.
Angels representing the hundreds of children in need this Christmas can be found at Walmart near the pharmacy entrance, BankTrust’s branches at East Brewton and northside; Bank of Brewton’s north branch and Regions Bank on Douglas Avenue.
Hart said gifts are beginning to come into the Chamber offices, but more shopping needs to be done.
Hart said the deadline to bring in items for the children is Dec. 11.
Hart said. “We have to have time to organize everything. We have to sort the items by age and gender and get things wrapped and grouped for each child.”
Hart said gifts should be brought into the office unwrapped to help aid in the sorting process.
Hart said volunteers do a large part of the work with Stephanie Walker leading the way for the past several years.
Walker said her job is a little bigger this year with more children being added to the project list.
Walker said she enlists the help of volunteers from schools, service and civic clubs and private individuals to make the workload lighter.
Not all of the more than 600 angels were hung on trees this year, Hart said.
Not only do service clubs help with providing gifts for needy children, Hart said there are several generous individuals who help as well.
Hart said there are many angels yet to be claimed and shopped for this year.
Hart said information for the child in the project can be found on the back of the angel.
Hart said sponsors are asked to spend a minimum of $70 on each child making sure to include at least one toy that is gender and age appropriate.
