The City of Brewton is expanding its quality of life offerings, with plans to buy an indoor mounted movie screen that would effectively turn the city’s community center into a temporary movie theater.
Parks and Recreation Director Gary Hill requested up to $600 from the city council to purchase a permanently mounted movie screen — which he said would be put to use quickly when the city hosts a holiday movie showing on Dec. 22.
The city has a movie projector system purchased with funds raised by last year’s Leadership Brewton class. The city premiered the movie system last month at the chamber-sponsored Holiday Kickoff, but Hill said the team running the movie projector discovered a problem: when the dewpoint gets low enough, the outdoor screen gets wet.
Having an indoor screen will allow the city to show movies even when atmospheric conditions prevent them from showing them outside, he said.
The holiday movie to be shown Dec. 22 is a Walt Disney movie, Hill said. The film will have two showings that day — 3 p.m. and 5:25 p.m. — and the first 200 people at each showing will be able to see it. Anyone under 13 should be accompanied by a parent, Hill said.
In other business Tuesday, accountant Vance Kilgore praised the city for its fiscal responsibility. The city received an accounting achievement award recently.
