Hubbard Owens will be remembered as a “caring spirit” his friend and colleague  said Friday, a day after the Brewton native succumbed to cancer after a long battle.
Owens, a lifelong resident of Brewton, graduated from Auburn University and went to work as a pharmacist at Mooreman’s Drugs in downtown Brewton. He worked there during the years Willard Mooreman owned the store and while Herman Melton owned it. He then bought the pharmacy and ran it for several years. In 1985, when Danny Cottrell bought the business and moved to the Medical Center Pharmacy at the Brewton Medical Center, Owens moved too, along with many of his longtime customers.
Carolyn Kennedy had worked with Owens through all those years.
Dr. Ed Glaize, pastor of First United Methodist Church, said he had watched over the past two years and saw the fight he made in his battle with cancer.
Owens is survived by a son, John Paul (Victoria) Owens of Nashville, Tenn., a daughter, Shelley Owens of Brewton; a brother, Paul D. (Kate) Owens Jr. of Brewton; and three grandchildren, Matthew Carr, Kai Owens and Alessandra Owens.
Graveside funeral services will be held Sunday, Dec. 20, at 2 p.m. at Union Cemetery with Dr. Ed Glaize officiating and Craver’s Funeral Home directing. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Greater Brewton Foundation or First United Methodist Church of Brewton.
