With 2009 coming to an end, the first decade of high school in the 2000s has come and gone.
Hoover finished as the team with the most wins in the 2000s decade by going 130-16.
Locally, T.R. Miller finished eighth in the state with a record of 109-24 and W.S. Neal finished 187th with a 55-52 record out of 455 teams.
T.R. Miller finished with the most wins in the 1990s with a record of 117-19. W.S. Neal was 80th with a record of 70-39.
T.R. Miller had two state championships in both decades.
Hoover had the most state championships in the decade with six. The Bucs won in 2000, won four straight from 2002-2005, and again this year for their sixth.
This past season, T.R. Miller finished with a record of 10-2 and W.S. Neal finished 2-8 under first year head coach Kevin Jordan.
For the 2010 season, both teams remained in their current classifications, just with some new teams in it.
Here is T.R. Miller’s schedule for the 2010 season:
Escambia County, Andalusia, and W.S. Neal will be the non-region games this season for the Tigers.
For W.S. Neal in 2010, the Eagles will start with a Kickoff Classic game against Opp at home on Friday, Aug. 20. The Eagles will have non-region games against Flomaton, Hillcrest-Evergreen, and T.R. Miller.
Here is the schedule for the Eagles.
Off of this past seasons roster, the Tigers will lose 18 seniors while returning 48 players. W.S. Neal loses nine seniors and will return 27 players.
New people on the Eagles’ schedule include Flomaton, Escambia County, and Saraland. Flomaton will be a non-region game while Saraland is a new school beginning in 2010.
T.R. Miller’s schedule includes new opponents Excel, Montgomery Academy, Andalusia, Washington County, Trinity Presbyterian, and Montgomery Catholic.
As for college football, Alabama won their first SEC Championship since 1999 Saturday defeating Florida 32-13 in a game many thought would be low scoring.
The win over Florida improved Alabama to 13-0 and advanced them to their first national championship game since 1992 and first BCS National Championship game, as they will take on 13-0 Texas in Pasadena.
The SEC has won three straight national championships. Look for Alabama to make it four in a row.
The college football bowl season is well underway.
Locally, the T.R. Miller Lady Tigers completed another sweep in the Escambia County Tournament Monday in Flomaton.
Once again, the T.R. Miller Lady Tiger basketball swept their Escambia County tournament foes to claim their third straight county tournament championship Monday night in Flomaton.
The Lady Tigers improved to 8-1 with the sweep of teams.
T.R. Miller opened the tournament with a 66-33 win over Escambia County and defeated W.S. Neal 45-20 on Saturday.
On Monday, the Lady Tigers faced off with 2-0 Flomaton in the championship game and grabbed a 40-21 win to take the championship.
The championship win improved T.R. Miller to 26-1 in tournament games since 2001 and posted another 3-0 sweep.
T.R. Miller has swept tournament teams from 2001-2005 and from 2007-2009.
The only loss for T.R. Miller was in 2006 when they lost to Escambia County in the tournament championship game 49-39. Before the Escambia County loss, the Lady Tigers were 17-0 in tournament games.
Congrats Lady Tigers on the win and to all teams.
Besides T.R. Miller’s basketball teams competiting in the Clarke County Christmas Tournament this week, all our area teams are done until the first of the year.
I hope everyone had a great Christmas and will have a great few days left of 2009 and is looking forward to seeing what 2010 has to offer.
