Happy New Year 2010 everyone. With the New Year now upon us, I hope everyone had a great time of celebration and was safe.
As I was finishing up my stories for today’s paper, I was reminded about a team in our sports area that I forgot to mention in my end of the year awards column Wednesday.
It just added to the success of the teams that we had in our area in the 2009 sports season.
The 2009 Brewton Middle School football team finished 7-0 this past season under head coach Gerald McAnally.
It was the first undefeated season for the Tigers since McAnally took over the program three years ago.
This year’s team posted three shutouts defensively and outscored their opponents 212-28 in their seven games.
Folks, that is an average of 30.3-4.
That is correct, four points a game.
The Tigers won 46-0, 12-6, 16-6, 28-8, 34-0, 34-0, and 42-8.
Congrats to the Brewton Middle School 2009 football team and my apologies for not mentioning them along with the other great memories that the 2009 season beheld.
On a different note, if you have not already had your fill of college bowl games this season, we have nine more left to go.
One of the better games I am looking forward to is going to be the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl on Monday night between Boise State and TCU.
Locally, we have the GMAC Bowl on Wednesday, Jan. 6, in Mobile between the Troy Trojans and Central Michigan.
Troy won the Sun Belt again this season but chose to go to the GMAC Bowl instead of the New Orleans Bowl this season.
And for the big one the next night for all the marbles, we have the University of Alabama Crimson Tide, No. 1 in the BCS, taking on the Texas Longhorns for the National Championship in Pasadena in the Rose Bowl.
This is the first time the Crimson Tide has played in the National Championship game since January 1993 and they defeated Miami to win the 1992 National Championship.
I know I am not that old as I keep being told around the office here, but I was only 9 when Alabama last won a National Championship and now am 26.
I look for Alabama to get No. 13 Thursday. As for a prediction, lets go with Alabama 31-17.
When asked this the other day by a family member at Christmas, I gave them the answer of 28-17 Alabama, but seeing how Alabama most definitely has to have a field goal in every game this year, I had to put an extra three points on to my score.
