For the first time since the 1993 Sugar Bowl, the University of Alabama football team will be playing for a National Championship Thursday night in Pasadena in the BCS National Championship game.
No. 1 Alabama (13-0), winner of the SEC, will take on No. 2 Texas (13-0), winner of the Big-12, at 7 p.m. on ABC.
It will mark the fourth straight year that an SEC team will be playing for the championship.
SEC teams have won the title three straight years in a row and is 5-0 in the games all-time.
Brewton resident and former Alabama football player Roger Chapman was on the 1978 national championship team that defeated Penn State 14-7 in the Sugar Bowl.
Chapman, who kicked off and kicked field goals and extra points, said this week that Alabama will have to play another great game on offense and defense like they did against Florida to beat Texas. 
Chapman said Texas quarterback Colt McCoy does not scare him as much as Tim Tebow of Florida did running, but Texas has a lot of other weapons and will use them. 
While Texas has some weapons, Chapman says Alabama has a few weapons of their own. 
One key factor in the game could be the play of Alabama’s first Heisman trophy winner Mark Ingram.
Ingram is the third consecutive sophomore to win the Heisman. Now, he’s trying to become just the third Heisman recipient this decade to win a bowl game.
USC quarterback Matt Leinart, whose team won the 2005 Orange Bowl over Okla-homa, was the last Heisman winner to win in the postseason.
USC quarterback Carson Palmer, the 2002 winner, is the only other Heisman recipient to win in the postseason this decade; the Trojans beat Iowa in the Orange Bowl that season.
Ingram is the eighth Heisman winner this decade to play in the title game.
Ingram will also be looking to buck some odds in that regard, too.
Leinart is the only Heisman winner who has won in the title game.
Along with Jones and Ingram, Chapman thinks Javier (Arenas) may break a return and that will be big.
As mentioned earlier, Chapman was on the 1978 National Championship team for Alabama.
He says winning a national championship is why you play the game. 
Chapman said winning in 1978 against Penn State was great and that being from the South, they always seemed to be the underdog against the favorite teams from the North like Penn State, Notre Dame and Ohio State. 
As for a prediction of the final score, Chapma had some specific scores in mind.
Alabama has played in an NCAA-record 57 bowl games and is tied with USC for the most wins with 31.
Texas has the second-most bowl appearances with 49.
The Longhorns have dominated the Tide in eight meetings, going 7-0-1.
The last match up came in the 1982 Cotton Bowl, a 14-12 Texas win.
Texas last won the national championship in 2005 in the Rose Bowl as the No. 2 team in the BCS when they defeated No. 1 USC 41-38.
