A message of justice, equality and hope was clear Sunday evening as a community gathered to celebrate the life of Martin Luther King Jr.
The Rev. H.K. Matthews delivered the message at Zion Fountain AME Zion Church as part of a celebration sponsored by the Brewton precinct of the Alabama Democratic Conference organization.
In his address Matthews reminded those attending that King’s dream must be kept alive to ensure justice for all.
Matthews said. “You can kill the dreamer, but you can’t kill the dream.”
Matthews said the dream of King is one that Americans can keep alive simply by taking action against injustice.
Matthews reminded the audience that King’s actions so many years ago have brought about change for black Americans.
Matthews, a civil rights activist, said the dream has been dangerous over the years but he has fought to keep the dream alive throughout the trials in his life.
Matthews offered words of encouragement to those who are fighting the fight against racism and injustice.
Joe Watson, chairman of the Brewton branch of ADC, offered thanks to those who made the weekends events possible in the celebration.
