What an amazing sight on Saturday morning: Dozens of young people, armed with garbage bags and rubber gloves, set out along the side of Highway 41 to pick up the debris left by last month’s flood.
How many of us have driven past that area in recent weeks and haven’t thought twice about what to do about the paper and wood and pieces of signs littering the woods?
In just a few hours last weekend, students and volunteers from seven churches and organizations gathered to clean up the mess, organized by First Presbyterian Church youth minister Carl McInnish.
McInnish had been praying for a way to let God work in the lives of his youth. The project he organized was a way for our entire community — both sides of Murder Creek — to come together for a common purpose.
Students from T.R. Miller and W.S. Neal, volunteers from both Brewton and East Brewton, joined for the project. Football players hauled tires out of the woods, while younger children didn’t hesitate to jump right in.
McInnish offered a prayer before the group got to work, and they are words that all of us throughout our community can live by:
