An East Brewton woman is facing charges in connection with the alleged theft of thousands of dollars worth of gold.
Judith “Jill” Overstreet Goolsby of East Brewton was arrested by Brewton Police officers Wednesday after a months-long investigation into the missing gold.
Goolsby was charged with two counts of first-degree theft of property and was booked into the Escambia County Detention Center.
Investigating officer Steve Ferguson said Goolsby had been a person of interesting in an investigation spanning several months.
Police allege Goolsby intercepted two UPS packages of gold items intended for a company that reimburses owners for the jewelry. According to police, Goolsby then sold the items to other gold companies and pocketed the payment.
The case began when two packages containing more than $45,000 in gold were reported missing after begin dropped off for pickup by United Parcel Services from Milligan’s in downtown Brewton.
Brewton Police contacted Golden Girls LLC, a Fort Myers, Fla., business, about the  two packages that were to have been shipped in September and October 2009. Neither package was received by Golden Girls, nor were they picked up by UPS employees, police said.
Ferguson said the cooperation of Milligan’s was invaluable in leading to the arrest. “Milligan’s worked great together with the Brewton Police Department throughout the investigation of this case,” he said.
Goolsby was released on bond. No information on the amount of the bond was available at press time.
