Brewton Police Department’s Narcotics Division has had a busy week making three arrests of city residents for crimes ranging from drug charges to resisting arrest.
Two Brewton men were arrested Jan. 25 when patrol officers made an investigation into a suspicious vehicle located in a vacant lot on St. Nicholas Avenue.
Douglas Walker Jr., the driver of the vehicle, and passenger Quentin Galloway were arrested after officers noticed a substance believed to be marijuana in the vehicle.
Officers asked the two men to exit the vehicle after making contact with them.
Officer Ricky Carpenter searched the vehicle and the suspects. During the search, Carpenter recovered approximately three grams of a hard, white substance believed to be crack/cocaine from Galloway.
After having made the discovery, Carpenter was struck in the chest by Galloway who then attempted to flee on foot from the scene.
After a short foot pursuit, officers were able to capture Galloway in a wooded area near Murphy Street.
Officers then placed Galloway under arrest charging him with possession of a controlled substance, assault second degree and resisting arrest.
Walker was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana second degree and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Galloway remained in the Escambia County Detention Center as of press time on a $15,000 bond. Walker was released after being charged with the misdemeanor.
Jeffrey Smith was arrested Jan. 21 just before 8 p.m. when Brewton Police officers made a traffic stop on a vehicle in which he was a passenger. Officers reported witnessing the vehicle failing to stop at a stop sign near Green Street in downtown Brewton.
As officers made contact with the driver and passenger of the vehicles, they report noticing strange behavior by Smith, who was a passenger in the vehicle.
Officer Ricky Carpenter asked Smith to exit the vehicle. As the suspect exited the vehicle Carpenter reported observing a small amount of marijuana in Smith’s shoes.
Smith began to struggle with officers, which led to the eventual deployment of a Taser on the suspect. Smith was then placed in handcuffs after losing a struggle with the officers and was charged with possession of marijuana second degree and resisting arrest.
Smith is being held at the Escambia County Detention Center in lieu of bond pending probation violation hearing in connection with a previous youthful offender case.
